GEA Air Treatment supplies central and decentral air-handling solutions. Air can be filtered, heated, cooled, humidified and dehumidified in a cost-effective and eco-friendly way. The products are suited for various sectors: They help hotels provide a comfortable atmosphere for their guests, create pleasant and productive working conditions in offices, ensure wellbeing in churches and museums and simultaneously protect the buildings’ structures and exhibits.

Precision air-handling units ensure a constant indoor climate in laboratories or datacenters, hygienic units in turn are geared to the needs of the health sector or the industry. Air filter systems and last but not least cleanroom systems produce clean production conditions und minimize health hazards.

Economic motors, systems for heat recovery or the integration of environmental heat and cold enhance among others the solutions’ energy efficiency; in-house control systems moreover offer further savings potential.

Air Treatment heavily invests in its own research and development projects, with emphasis on sophisticated control technology. Systems with in creasing intelligence characterize this work. Numerous new developments at GEA have consistently provided critical impetus to our business field.

Energy consumption

We at GEA have specialized in developing products with optimum energy efficiency. This topic is becoming increasingly more important, especially under the aspect that, in future, the now mandatory European Building Energy Certificate will readily provide valuable conclusions on the energy quality of a building structure.

We apply dynamic energy simulations to determine the energy influences that act on enclosed building space. In addition, we are also able to effectively simulate building automation and utilities systems, as well as technical plant systems, and to study energy conservation on a time-discrete basis. The following are taken into account:

  • The heat-storage effect of the body of the building
  • Climate data that depend on site conditions
  • Including analysis of extreme values
  • Interactions within the thermal building behaviour and
  • User behaviour.

Equipment performance

The Institute for Air Treatment Technology, located in Herne, Germany, offers measuring stations and test benches for optimization and study of system output.

Measuring paths for air flow and heat-output performance

  • Plotting of fan characteristics up to 30,000 m³/h
  • Combined air-flow and heat-output measurements
  • Heat-output measurements of heat exchangers up to 120 kW
  • Build of systems with air-delivery cross sections up to 1800 x 2000 mm
  • Automated determination of all relevant air- and heat-engineering variables (motor speed, electric power, pressure rise, volume flow, water mass flow, temperatures)

Environmental chamber

Acoustics

We perform testing to determine whether the relationship between performance capability and noise emission is optimal. In our acoustic testing facilities, we offer standardized acoustic-power measurements in accordance with comparative testing techniques.

We employ advanced measurement systems in the form of real-time analysis devices that enable short measuring times. The systems being tested can be studied in accordance with their requirements, for example

  • Measurements on the intake side
  • Measurements on the delivery side
  • Overall acoustic-power measurements.

Thermal comfort

We spend most of the time in our lives in closed rooms. That’s why a healthy room environment is so important for our comfort. Various factors contribute here: Various standards and directives provide essential information on generally valid criteria for thermal comfort. Our laboratory for measuring air and heat flow in rooms is available for simulation of a great variety of room situations.

Measuring systems can acquire data on all room-environment variables that play an important role in determining thermal comfort. This makes it possible to optimize room design with respect to comfort.

Sensors supported in place can accurately determine the prevailing environmental conditions in a room.

Our computer-aided flow-analysis systems provide key support in the determination and verification of comfort characteristics. These facilities not only allow conduct of room-climate tests and comfort simulations, but also enable the optimization of air-flow characteristics.

Structural analysis

In the field of engineering design as well, we offer essential support for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. We apply advanced CAD technology in this area of work, closely linked to component and assembly optimization by FEM. In this way, we also effectively carry out temperature-field studies for cases involving the consequences of thermal loads and deformations in solids.

Institute (IfL)

Competences inhouse

Air Treatment's own research and development departments, as well as the independent Institute for Air Treatment (Institut für Lüftungstechnik, IfL), are essential components of the future-oriented activities and the special competencies of Air Treatment: efforts necessary to satisfy the great demands that the company places on the products and services that it provides.
The planning competencies of the Institute include efficiency analyses and evaluations of HVAC concepts, customer-specific optimization of equipment and facility concepts, dynamic energy simulations, and design of systems in accordance with EnEV 2009 and EEWärmeG.
Simulation of the flow of room air, comfort analyses, development of concepts for routing of airflow, evaluation and improvement of airflow concepts, as well as design of industrial air-extraction airflow – all these are likewise part of the assignments carried out by the Institute for Air Treatment in Herne, Germany.

The measurement-technology expertise of the Institute encompasses airflow experiments in its three-dimensional flow laboratory, acoustic measurements in accordance with ISO 3741, performance testing in storage chambers, and airflow measurements according to ISO 5801.
